It appears that an unobservant gunman tried Monday to hold up an out-of-business Check Max in the City of Aiken before successfully robbing a similar type of place in North Augusta within an hour of the failed attempt. A witness described the suspect as a slender black male in his early 20s who was in black clothing, wearing a white “skull”-type Halloween mask and carrying a backpack. Officials have not confirmed suspicions that the suspect from the City of Aiken is the same who held up the North Augusta business, but because of a similar subject description, it is a part of the investigation, said Lt. The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a black man between 20 and 25 years old who may be anywhere from 5-foot-7 to 6-foot-2.
